چکیده

background and aim: the sexual hormones alter during menstrual cycle and pregnancy. despite the physiological benefits of these changes, their adverse effects on hearing system such as hearing loss and vertigo have been reported. therefore, in this study, the auditory brainstem responses (abr) were investigated during physiological hormonal variations in the menstrual cycle as well as pregnancy. methods: in this comparative-cross sectional research, the abr was assessed in 25 women, including 17 pregnant and 8 non-pregnant women. the assessment was conducted at 24th week of pregnancy and in two stages of the menstrual cycle, on the 1st-3rd day and once again during the 12th-15th day in non-pregnant women (control group). click stimuli abr was recorded and compared between aforementioned groups. results: according to our results, abr wave v absolute latency, iii-v and i-v interpeak latencies were significantly longer during the 12th-15th day of menstrual cycle compared to 1st-3rd day results (p<0.05). these significant increases were observed between pregnant women and control groups (p<0.05). conclusion: the research revealed the influence of hormonal changes during menstrual cycle and pregnancy on brainstem and auditory pathways. we concluded that the brainstem auditory pathways processing decelerates with the increase of estrogen and progesterone hormones.

Brainstem auditory evoked responses in different phases of menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) show variations with age, sex and other physiological factors. The gonadal steroids may also alter the neuronal functioning, but an electrophysiological evidence is sparse. This study was undertaken to analyze the auditory evoked response in females of the reproductive age group during four different hormonal states of the me...

AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSES (ABR) IN HYPERBILIRUBINEMIC NEWBORNS

To evaluate the changes of ABR values in hyperbilirubinemic newborns, 85 cases with severe jaundice (total bilirubin levels over 16 mg/dL and direct bilirubin less than 2 mg/dL) were selected from those admitted to Children's Medical Center by simple sampling method. These infants had no other problem except jaundice. ABR was taken before treatment in all cases and in some (10 cases) after...

Brainstem auditory evoked responses in brainstem infarction.

Brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were recorded in 40 patients with clinically definite brainstem infarction, and results were compared to localizations from physical signs and CT scans. The BAER was abnormal in 92% of patients with evidence on physical examination of dysfunction of lateral structures in the pons or midbrain. Normal BAERs were seen with medially-situated or medullary ...

Central conduction time in auditory brainstem response and ear advantage in dichotic listening across menstrual cycle

The ovarian hormones fluctuate during the menstrual cycle in women. Such fluctuation of sex hormones, in particular estrogen, is believed to affect the central conduction time in auditory function as well as the language lateralization in cognitive function. However, findings are inconsistent. The underlying mechanisms are also unclear. This paper examined if there was any relation between the ...
